Where Can I Learn Cake Decorating?

Where Can I Learn Cake Decorating?

Whether you are new to cake decorating or just want to expand your knowledge or skills, you may find yourself wondering “Where Can I Learn Cake Decorating?”…..

Well….there is no one size fits all answer to this, so let’s explore some of the options available below:

Where can I learn cake decorating? A blog by Julie's Cake in a Box

Hands On (attended) classes

You can learn all aspects and levels of cake decorating skills and techniques by attending classes at venues all around the world! If you prefer to learn by ‘doing’, as well as having the tutor on hand in person to answer your questions, then these could be an ideal option for you.

Attending a cake class is perfect for those who prefer 'hands on' learning

Pros to hands on classes:

  • The tutor is on hand to help and give advice throughout the class, as well as answering any questions you may have
  • Equipment and materials are generally provided for you to use at the class
  • You meet and get to know new, like-minded people – great for making new friends
  • Cake classes are a fabulous way to treat yourself to some ‘me time’, away from it all, whilst learning a new skill

Cons to hands on classes:

  • You may need to travel if cake decorating classes are not available locally
  • Class dates/times may not suit you

Pros for using free online tutorials:

  • There are lots out there
  • They are readily available

Cons for using free online tutorials:

  • They are often full of advertisements
  • The quality of video/camera angles may not be very good
  • Sometimes they are timelapse videos, rather than real time

Where can I learn Cake Decorating from if I want ‘paid for’ online tutorials?

There are a number of options, including membership based online cake schools and buying individual tutorials by specific tutors/cake artists that you may follow.

Pros of ‘paid for’ online tutorials:

  • Quality of video tends to be much higher
  • After sales service is often available – eg private FB group/forum to ask questions
  • Membership cake schools often include a large quantity of tutorials all in one place
  • Individually purchased tutorials will be yours to keep for a lifetime, as a general rule

Cons of ‘paid for’ online tutorials:

  • You have to pay for them, either individually or as a monthly/yearly membership subscription

Find out which online membership cake decorating school I recommend……

I have been a member of a variety of subscription based, online cake schools over the years, but one in particular stands out to me, and is the one I would recommend to ALL cake decorators, whether you are just starting out or are a seasoned pro. I have been a member since 2018, and have no plans to cancel my membership to this one!! It offers excellent value for money!

Pretty Witty Academy has 1,000’s of video lessons (both cake decorating and business tutorials), from over 80 guest tutors, suitable for all skill levels. There are also regular, exclusive live tutorials from a variety of tutors, where you can ask questions during the demonstration. You can even request tutorials if you can’t find what you are looking for!

And, as if all this wasn’t enough, there is also a fabulously supportive community forum, where you can ask questions and chat. Lots of the guest tutors are also members, so you can chat to them too!
