I thought it was time to do something I don’t like very much. That is writing about myself!! So, here goes, it’s time to meet Julie, the person behind the cakes at Julie’s Cake in a Box.
From where it all started, to where I am now…….
Here I am, on the left, hating every second of being photographed!!
I live in Beverley, East Yorkshire (UK), have 3 children (Andrew 21, Rachel 19 and Jack 16 – at time of writing). I also have a dog, Sandy the Springer Spaniel. She tends to be mostly chilled and laid back rather than ‘springy’!
Where did it all start?
As you may have read in my blog “Baking with Your Children“, I have always loved baking, both as a child with my mum, then as an adult, baking myself and with my own children.
However, I only started decorating cakes around 7 years ago, after I had second thoughts about training to be a teacher (I was working as a Nursery Nurse in a local primary school at the time). Instead, I decided to take up a new hobby, and so, armed with some sugar paste and a whole heap of excitement, I ‘created’ my first masterpiece!! Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of my first cake, but here are some of my early masterpieces from 2012……
I was so proud of my first attempts at decorating, and it made me eager to keep going and learn new techniques!
Mostly I learnt through practise, video tutorials and books, but I did also attend a few classes over the years for specific skills.
After a couple of years of decorating family cakes, I was encouraged by family and close friends to start a business (my skills had improved somewhat by then).
After hours of thinking and seeking advice about possible names for the business…. ‘Julie’s Cake in a Box’ was born.
My very first order, was for this ‘Penguin in a hot tub’ cake for a lovely lady who loves penguins, but has a summer birthday!
Gradually, over the next few years, orders began to increase, as did my experience and skill levels…..
A fun 80’s themed cake!
A 2d (vegan friendly) cat cake
A make up themed cake
Cakes for competing…
After a couple of visits to Cake International (a huge show for cake people, normally held at the NEC), I plucked up the courage to enter in November 2016.
I entered the ‘Decorative Exhibit’ category, with a piece inspired by The BFG (which had been released in the cinema that year), and was both thrilled and amazed to receive a Silver award for him!!
The open book was carved from Rice Krispie Treats, covered in chocolate ganache and sugar paste, whilst the figures were hand modelled using modelling paste.
Spurred on by this, I entered again in Spring 2017, again a Decorative Exhibit, but this time an even bigger piece of The Night King, from Game of Thrones. A life size head and shoulders bust, built with Rice Krispie Treats around an internal frame.
The Night King was awarded a GOLD at Cake International 2017
Over the next 2 years, I entered again, but this time in the Small Decorative Exhibit category, which had to fit in a 12″ cube space. This was more of a challenge, and I received Silver and Bronze awards for my Nov 2017 and 2018 entries….
With several awards under my belt, I continued to grow my business. At this point I was still running the business part time, alongside my job.
In July 2018, I made the brave decision to go full time with my cake business. This has given me the time to pursue lots of different areas within the cake world.
What else do I do?
Creating dream cakes for my customers is my main occupation, but I do other cake related things too:
My tutorials are published in cake decorating magazines and I am a guest tutor for Pretty Witty Academy, an online tutorial site.
Valentine Heart Balloon tutorial, published in Cake Decoration and Sugarcraft Magazine
Gym themed tutorial published online at Pretty Witty Academy
I create exhibits for feature displays at Cake International.
I have been a member of the Katy Sue Design Team for 3 years, creating cakes for marketing their moulds.
Fast forward to now..
Nowadays, I mostly specialise in large, novelty style celebration or wedding cakes. However, I am equally happy creating stylish, beautiful wedding cakes too.

A new venture….
So, what’s new at Julie’s Cake in a Box?
This year, I have also started to share my knowledge, by teaching small cake decorating classes locally, in Beverley, East Yorkshire.
I am planning lots of new classes, and hoping to teach at other venues around the UK too in the future.
So, as you can see, the past 7 years have led me on quite a journey. I wonder what is in store for me over the next 7 years????
As they say……watch this space!
